    High levels of T lymphocyte activation in Leishmania-HIV-1 co-infected individuals despite low HIV viral load

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Concomitant infections may influence HIV progression by causing chronic activation leading to decline in T-cell function. In the Americas, visceral (AVL) and tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) have emerged as important opportunistic infections in HIV-AIDS patients and both of those diseases have been implicated as potentially important co-factors in disease progression. We investigated whether leishmaniasis increases lymphocyte activation in HIV-1 co-infected patients. This might contribute to impaired cellular immune function.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To address this issue we analyzed CD4<sup>+ </sup>T absolute counts and the proportion of CD8<sup>+ </sup>T cells expressing CD38 in <it>Leishmania</it>/HIV co-infected patients that recovered after anti-leishmanial therapy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that, despite clinical remission of leishmaniasis, AVL co-infected patients presented a more severe immunossupression as suggested by CD4<sup>+ </sup>T cell counts under 200 cells/mm<sup>3</sup>, differing from ATL/HIV-AIDS cases that tends to show higher lymphocytes levels (over 350 cells/mm<sup>3</sup>). Furthermore, five out of nine, AVL/HIV-AIDS presented low CD4<sup>+ </sup>T cell counts in spite of low or undetectable viral load. Expression of CD38 on CD8<sup>+ </sup>T lymphocytes was significantly higher in AVL or ATL/HIV-AIDS cases compared to HIV/AIDS patients without leishmaniasis or healthy subjects.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>Leishmania </it>infection can increase the degree of immune system activation in individuals concomitantly infected with HIV. In addition, AVL/HIV-AIDS patients can present low CD4<sup>+ </sup>T cell counts and higher proportion of activated T lymphocytes even when HIV viral load is suppressed under HAART. This fact can cause a misinterpretation of these laboratorial markers in co-infected patients.</p

    Magnetic Barkhausen emission in lightly deformed AISI 1070 steel

    The Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) technique can evaluate both micro- and macro-residual stresses, and provides indication about the relevance of contribution of these different stress components. MBN measurements were performed in AISI 1070 steel sheet samples, where different strains were applied. The Barkhausen emission is also analyzed when two different sheets, deformed and non-deformed, are evaluated together. This study is useful to understand the effect of a deformed region near the surface on MBN. The low permeability of the deformed region affects MBN, and if the deformed region is below the surface the magnetic Barkhausen signal increases. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.     Nondestructive inspection of plastic deformation in commercial carbon steels using magnetic Barkhausen noise

    The present work shows measurements of the Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) in commercial AISI/SAE 1045 and ASTM 36 steel deformed samples. The correlation between the MBN root mean square, Barkhausen signal profile and MBN power spectrum with the plastic deformation is established. The results show that the power spectral density of the Barkhausen signal is more effective as nondestructive evaluator than root mean square of Barkhausen signal. The Outcomes also suggest the presence of unbalanced tensions between the surface and the bulk of sample due to the presence of plastic deformation

    Psoriasis in Tigray, Ethiopia: focusing on available treatments

    Psoriasis has been reported to be rare in people with skin of color. However, the actual prevalence is probably underestimated by the lack of wide epidemiological studies. The aim of the study is to present our experience in Tigray, Ethiopia, focusing on the issues related to diagnosis, clinical features and therapies. A total of 1288 people affected by psoriasis were visited and 954 were included in a retrospective analysis through the review of medical records of patients attending at three Dermatologic Centers in Ethiopia from 2005 to 2016. The most common clinical form is plaque psoriasis (62.9%), followed by guttate (13.9%), pustular (9.5%), inverse (7.5%), and erythrodermic (6.1%) ones. The prevalence of psoriatic arthritis is 17%. It is often diagnosed late resulting in particularly deforming and debilitating disease. Patients with severe psoriasis often require hospitalization due to the reduced availability of effective treatments and appropriate skin care, resulting in a prolonged recurrence rate or decreased disease-free interval. In poorer rural areas, patients use some traditional African plants such as Kigelia africana which have been shown to have partial benefits in the treatment of psoriasis. Unfortunately, the only available conventional therapies are topical steroids, salicylic acid, methotrexate, and the sun. More studies concerning the appropriate management of people with psoriasis in low income countries, including standardization of indigenous therapies and a reduction of costs of conventional drugs, could help the care of people with psoriasis

    Emerging antifungal treatment failure of dermatophytosis in Europe: take care or it may become endemic

    Background: Dermatophytosis is a world-wide distributed common infection. Antifungal drug resistance in dermatophytosis used to be rare, but unfortunately the current Indian epidemic of atypical widespread recalcitrant and terbinafine-resistant dermatophytosis is spreading and has sporadically been reported in Europe. Objectives: To explore the occurrence of clinical and mycological proven antifungal drug resistance in dermatophytes in Europe. Methods: A standardized questionnaire was distributed through the EADV Task Force of Mycology network to dermatologists in Europe. Results: Representatives from 20 countries completed the questionnaires of which 17 (85 %) had observed clinical and/or mycological confirmed antifungal resistance, two countries published cases of antifungal resistance and one country had no known cases. Conclusions: This pilot study confirms that both clinical and mycological antifungal resistance exist in Europe
